  1. A British protectorate since 1892, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands
  2. colony was completed with the inclusion of the Phoenix Islands in
  3. 1937.  In 1971 self-rule was granted and the Ellice Islands
  4. separated from the colony in 1975 and became independent Tuvalu
  5. in 1978.  Kiribati (Pronounced Kiribass) became independent on
  6. July 12, 1979.  A Treaty of Friendship with the United States
  7. relinquished claims to the Line and Phoenix Islands.  Tarawa
  8. Atoll was the scene of some of the bloodiest fighting in the
  9. Pacific during World War II.                       @
